A water heater is an integral part of any household and must be working at all times because you never know when you might need it. ALthough one can try to do it themselves, it is not recommended. Below is a list of steps that will help educate you on how a water heater is installed.

Step 1 : Shut Off The Gas And Water Valves

Turn off the gas to the water heater by turning the off valve to the side. Once off, the handle will on its side. Shut off the main water supply to the water heater as well and drain the lines by opening a faucet.

Step 2 : Drain The Water Left Inside

Attach a hose to the drain valve to let the water left in the tank out. Keep in mind the water will be very hot. Disconnect the gas line with the help of a pair of wrenches and unscrew the pipe from the gas control valve with a pipe wrench.

Step 3 : Cut The Water Lines

Step 4 : Relief Valve Attachment

Wrap the threads of the new water heater's temperature and pressure relief valves with Teflon tape. Screw it tightly into the tank with the help of a pipe wrench. Attach a copper discharge pipe along with it.

Step 5 : Pipe Assembly Attachment

Solder the new copper adapters to 6 inches in lengths of 3/4 inches of copper and attach the assemblies into the hot water outlet and cold water inlets at the top of the tank. Add small, plastic lined nipples to shield against galvanic corrosion, especially if you have hard water available or if they’re required by local codes in the particular regions.

Step 6 : Attach Water Lines

Slide and fix the new water heater into place. Cut or extend the old tubing to meet the new if need be and solder the tubing together using copper slip couplings. If the tubings don’t line up, offset the respective lines as need be with pairs of 45 degree elbows.

Step 7 : Attach The Vents

Reconnect the vent. Push it tightly over the draft hood and fix it down with three 3/8 inches No. 6 sheet metal screws. Pre-drill the holes. The vent should rise at least 12 inches vertically by this and before turning at the first elbow.

Step 8 : Attach The Gas Line

Reconnect the gas line once other necessary attachment are made. Coat the threaded ends with a pipe joint compound and join the first nipple into the gas valve. Use two pipe wrenches to help avoid excessive stress the valve. Reassemble the remaining nipples, finishing up with the joint. Then follow the below given four steps to fill the tank

  1. Shut the drain valve properly
  2. Turn the water back on at the main shutoff point and open the cold water valve to the water heater and leave it open
  3. Turn on a hot water faucet until the water comes out
  4. Do a thorough inspection of all the joints and fittings for water leaks.

Step 9 : Inspect For Any Backdrafting

Most water heater vero beach rely on a natural draft to hep with combustion fumes up the apparatus. If the draft is of no use, those fumes, possibly containing deadly carbon monoxide, could probably spill out into your home. After completing installation, always check the draft. Close all doors and windows and turn on the kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans. Open a hot water faucet until the gas burner in the water heater ignites. After a minute or so, move around a lit match on the edge of the draft hood on top of the heater. The smoke should draw up the vent. If that is not the case, the fumes from the burner are not working. Turn off the water heater and call an experienced professional  to fix the problem. This task will be included in the water heater installation cost in Port Saint Lucie and elsewhere as well.

Step 10 : Check For Any Possible Leaks

Turn on the gas and check all connections for any leaks. Tighten or reconnect joints that leak. Wipe the joints dry when finished.
